Missing Books from the LMC

Friday, March 23, 2012

This is a note from Mrs. May that was sent to the staff here at school.

We’ve got a problem of epic proportions in the LMC, and I need your help. In the last 3 years, we have lost 271 books just from the Chapter Book and Graphic Novel sections. In that same time period, we have lost 63 picture books. That is over $5,000 worth of books from just 3 sections! A small portion of the books were lost while they were checked out, but most just disappear off the shelves.

Please look around all the hiding places in your house for books from the LMC while doing the annual spring cleaning. Thanks.

5B News for the Week of 04/02/2012

Welcome back!  I hope that everyone had an enjoyable Spring Break.  Here's what's going on this week in 5B:

Reading:  To start the week, we will be attending a bike assembly.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will continue to analyze poetry and begin to write our own poetry.  Later in the week, we will be listening to various songs and analyzing them.  This will continue into next week as well.

Flex:  During flex. we will continue to discuss communities and neighborhoods.  This topic was briefly introduced to the students the day before Spring Break.  The students will be designing a folder that will include components of a community and will share them with others in the group late in the week.  This was a popular project that 5B just completed and I thought my flex. students would also enjoy it.  However, it is a different topic.

Writing:  We will continue writing poetry during our writing time.  The students will read their poems aloud and then decide which of their poems is the best to display on the bulletin board in the hallway. We will also be writing six word memoirs...always a fun activity.

Math Accel:  We will continue in Unit 8 which will cover rates and proportions.  We will also be participating in a fun activity which came from a book we just recently read in class entitled, Because of Mr. Terupt.  The activity will include going outside (weather permitting) to estimate how many blades of grass are in May Watts' field.  The students will be working in groups.  The students will need to figure out a way to find the area of the field and approximately how many blades of grass are in it.

Social Studies:  We will continue our discussion of African Americans and the Revolution, patriots of war and the Constitution.

Have a great week, everyone!

5B News for the Week of 03/19/2012

Hello Parents,

This week is a short week for students.  There is no school on Tuesday, March 20th, due to a School Improvement Planning Day for teachers.  Also, on Friday, March 23rd, school will be dismissed at 12:05 for all students.  The afternoon is a teacher work day.  I wish you all a wonderful; safe spring break.  Let's hope this warm weather holds out awhile longer so that we can enjoy it over spring break.

Here's what's going on in 5B this week:

Reading- We will dive into poetry this week in reading.  There is a list of poems that we will be analyzing.  Some of the questions that we will be discussing will include the following:  What does the title mean?  What is the purpose of the poem?  What is the target audience of the poem?  Is there a lesson/moral in the poem? What is the implied meaning of the poem?  How does the poem evoke feelings?  These are great higher-level thinking questions that should provoke a lot of deep conversations.  We will also have some mini lessons on metaphors and have the students begin writing some free verse poetry.

Flex.- We will continue our study of Aesop's Fables and discussing the lessons that the stories teach us.  We will also continue our vocabulary work by visiting the websites http://www.freerice.com/ and http://www.vocabulary.co.il/.  The students are enjoying these interactive vocabulary websites.

Writing- We started our new writing activity a few days back.  The students are creating/designing a folder of information about either the Civil War and/or the Revolutionary War.  They are including events that pertain to these topics such as slavery, Underground Railroad, important people during these times, battles, etc.  The folders will be full of information by the time they are completed.  The due date for these will be this Friday.

Math Accel.- We just completed Unit 7 a few days ago.  The Unit 7 study guide went home last Thursday and will be due this Wednesday.  The Unit 7 test will also be on Wednesday.  On Friday, we finished lesson 8.1 and will continue to move forward in Unit 8 this week.

Social Studies- We tested Chapter 8 this past week and have now begun studying Chapter 9 which includes the events leading up to and including the Constitution of the United States.

Have a wonderful week!

5B News for the Week of 03/12/2012

Hello Parents:

I hope that you are all out enjoying this beautiful spring weather.  What a gift!  With ISAT testing behind us, we can now all breathe a sigh of relief!

Here's what's going on in 5B this week:

Reading-We will be studying a story from our anthology this week entitled, William Shakespeare and the Globe.  Some skills that we will be working on include determining importance, word analysis and contextual clues.  We will also focus on these same skills using our Time For Kids magazine this week.

Flex.- During flex. we will be using a variety of reading materials but mainly focusing on non-fiction.  I plan to check out some books from the library that focus on building values and understanding morals.  Hopefully, we'll be able to read some short stories that pertain to these topics and have some interesting discussions about them.

Writing- We will finally be finishing up our wormhole presentations on Monday.  Due to ISAT testing, these presentations had to be pushed back.  Then, we will begin a creative folder writing project that will pertain to the topic we've been discussing in social studies.

Math Accel.- We are about midway through Unit 7.  We will be having a short quiz on Tuesday that will cover lessons 7.3-7.7.  I have asked the students to review these pages in their journals and also their study link pages for these lessons.  The quiz will mainly focus on tree diagrams.  We should finish up Unit 7 prior to spring break, so keep watch for a study guide to be coming home within the next week.

Social Studies- We have discussed the events leading up to the Revolutionary War, the Revolutionary War, Battles of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill.  We wrapped up our Wardrobe Act and taxation without representation.  We will be having an open book/notes test on Tuesday this week that will cover the material in chapter 8.  Midweek, we will begin talking about the U.S. Constitution.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!  If you have any questions or concerns, please email me.

Thank you!
