5B News for the week of 11/14

Hello Parents:

Here's what's going on in 5B this week!

Reading-During reading, the students will be focusing on non-fiction books.  I have checked out a couple of interesting picture books from the library about the thirteen colonies.  This will also be our topic in social studies, along with the Pilgrims and Puritans. Looking forward to some interesting discussions.  We will also be utilizing various graphic organizers to use with these books as assessments.

Flex-Our focus in flex. this week will be fiction.  The students will be reading short fictional books and will discuss the main plot elements, compare themes and text structures.

Writing-Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?  This will be our topic of discussion in writing.  The students will be choosing to write about any person, dead or alive, real or fictional, that they would like to invite to Thanksgiving dinner.  We will be completing a 4-square graphic organizer and completing an essay on this topic.  Our creativity will be soaring!

Math Accel.-The students will be taking the Unit 3 test on Monday.  We will then begin Unit 4 on Tuesday which will focus on fractions.

Social Studies-The students presented their Colony Projects last week.  They were beautifully done!  I am amazed at how much creativity this group has!  Moving forward, the students will be introduced to Puritan and Pilgrim life, the thirteen colonies, and colonial economy.

Looking forward to a wonderful week ahead!  Have a fantastic week.
