Hello Parents and Students,
Time is flying by! The end of the first quarter is this Friday, October 26th. Report cards go home on Friday, November 2nd.
Also, remember that this Wednesday, October 24th, is Family Reading Night at May Watts from 6:30-8:00pm. Stop by for a fun night of reading!
On Friday, we will be meeting up with our Kindergarten buddies, for the second time this year, for a fun Halloween project!!
Here's what's going on in 5B this week:
Spelling: We will begin Unit 7 this week in spelling. The base word pattern is -ed and -ing endings.
Language Arts: We just recently finished our first read aloud book, Because of Mr. Terupt. This was an awesome book and many of the students could relate to the characters in it. The sequel to this book, which was just recently released, is entitled, Mr. Terupt Falls Again, and we will not be reading it as a read aloud in class because it gets into more teen-like topics. However, many of the students have expressed interest in reading it on their own. Our next class read aloud book will be, Night of the Twisters. Our next project will be discussing how we can change the World to make it a better place. This project was introduced to the students, in great detail, earlier this week. On Monday, the students will be split into groups where they will discuss which idea they will choose and how it will positively affect the World.
We will also continue with Time For Kids this week. We will be having a debate as to whether or not children need cell phones. Of course, during this time we will also do some silent reading, reading conferencing and newspaper work.
Math Accel: The students took the Unit 2 pretest last Thursday and on Friday we started the first lesson in Unit 2, which was reading and writing large numbers. We discussed place value, trillions, billions, millions, etc. and we will continue to work on this Monday. Mrs. Tobin will be visiting our class on Monday and she will introduce problem solving to us. We will then move on to reading and writing small numbers and adding and subtracting decimals.
Social Studies: Our colony projects are coming along very well. Many groups are bringing in clay, posterboards, etc. to showcase their projects. All colony projects should be completed by the end of the day Tuesday and presentations will be on Wednesday and Thursday. We are also working in our social studies textbooks and our focus is on Jamestown.
That's it for now. Enjoy this beautiful day!
