Hello Parents and Students:
Here we are at the last week of February! I can't believe how quickly the time is passing. Just a reminder that there is no school this Friday, March 1st, for students. It is Teacher Institute Day.
Then, the following week, ISAT testing begins. To prepare for ISAT testing, we will be doing some whole group practice and independent practice so that we know how to pace ourselves during the actual testing.
Here's what's going on in 5B this week:
Spelling: We are on Unit 21 this week. The words have been posted to the blog. The pretest will be on Monday and the test will be on THURSDAY.
Language Arts: During LA time this week, we will be doing a few different things. First, like I mentioned earlier, we will be doing some ISAT practice. Then, we will continue to work on our Courage activities. Many of us have completed our compare/contrast activity of two courageous people in history. We have written our own "courage" quotes and they were quite good! Going forward, we will begin to make our own courage books based on the book, Courage, by Bernard Waber. Depending on how much time we have this week, we may have to move this activity to next week. In writing, we will do another extended response based on the book, Wonder. We are nearing the end of the book, and it is so good. We will try to fit in a Time For Kids magazine for our current event focus. If we do, the topic will be saving cheetahs.
Math Accel: We will be testing Unit 4 on Monday. We may need to continue testing into Tuesday, as the Unit 4 test is lengthy. We just started Unit 5, which focuses on Geometry. Currently, we are studying integers and rational/irrational numbers. Unit 5 is short and will probably only take us about three weeks to complete. Also, a letter went home yesterday to all Math Accel. students informing you of the date for PA math testing.
Social Studies: We tested Chapter 8 last week. Chapter 9 is about the colonies declaring independence from Great Britain and the Revolutionary War.
That's it for now. The next two weeks are going to be busy, busy, busy!!!
Enjoy the weekend!

5B Activities for the Week of 2/18/13
Hello Parents and Students:
Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday or Tuesday this week for students. Monday is President's Day and Tuesday is Parent-Teacher Conferences from 1:00-8:00p.m. I have already contacted you if I feel a conference is necessary.
A big thank you to Mrs. Rohm and Mrs. Pastore for planning a wonderful Valentine's Day party for us!
And THANK YOU to all of the students who brought me delicious chocolates and other things to enjoy! I sincerely appreciate it!
Here's what's going on in 5B this week:
Spelling: There is no spelling this week due to the short week.
Language Arts: In reading, we will continue to discuss courageous acts. We read the book, Courage, last week and created a T-Chart that listed ordinary types of courage and phenomenal types of courage. We will continue this theme this week by comparing/contrasting courageous characters from books we've read. The TFK we will be reading this week talks about US currency. Do we really need the penny? It costs more to make it than it's worth! In writing, we will continue to work on our extended responses that go along with the book, Wonder.
Math Accel.: We have just about finished up Unit 4. The Unit 4 study guide will be coming home this week. The test will be either the following Tuesday or Wednesday. We will begin Unit 5 this week which focuses on Geometry.
Social Studies: We just finished up Chapter 8 last week. We made a study guide and the Chapter 8 test will be on the day the students return, Wednesday. They should be studying the study guide and rereading the Chapter 8 worksheets that we completed in class.
That's it for now. Enjoy the next two days off!

5B News for the Week of February 11th, 2013
Hello Parents and Students!
Just a few reminders for the upcoming week. First, Parent-Teacher Conference forms went home on Friday. Please check your child's backpack. Next, Our Valentine's Day Party will be this Thursday, February 14th, from 2:30-3:15. Sending in Valentine cards is optional, however, if your child chooses to send in cards, please have them bring in one for every child in the class. Also, there should be no candy attached to the cards. Thank you.
It was great to see all of the wonderful science experiments at the Science Fair. Great job by all!
And...Congratulations on a job well done at the 5th Grade Musical!
We will be attending a PTA assembly on Tuesday morning! We are looking forward to it.
Here's what's going on this week in 5B:
Spelling: Unit 20 has been posted to the blog. The pretest will be on Monday and the test will be on Friday, as usual.
Language Arts: We will be starting a new extended response in writing this week. The question will be another one that's related to our read-aloud book, Wonder. The kids are really enjoying this book. It's very touching. We will also be finishing up an expository writing piece. In reading, I will be introducing a short picture book entitled, Courage. We will be discussing various kinds of courage over the next few weeks and will compare/contrast different characters from books that have shown courage. We will also be reading a TFK which will focus on the highlights of 2012. In grammar, we will continue our work with verbs.
Math Accel.: We have discussed least common multiple, greatest common factor, multiplying decimals and will soon begin studying percentage. We had an exit slip last friday on LCM and GCF. Some students are still a bit confused between these two skills. We will review it again over the next few days.
Social Studies: We have switched back over to social studies. We have discussed some vocabulary words and completed a lesson on taxing. (Almost!) Moving forward, we will be focusing on the colonists and how they rebelled against the British. We will also discuss the Stamp Act, Townshend Acts and the Boston Tea Party.
Please email me with any questions or concerns.
Enjoy the weekend!
