5B News for the Week of January 28th, 2013

Hello Parents & Students:

Just a couple of reminders for this week's events.  Open House is this Wednesday evening, 1/30,  from 6:30-8:30pm.  Stop by to visit!

Our Robert Crown field trip is this Friday, February 1st.  If you have not returned your permission form and money, please do so as soon as possible.  We will be eating lunch upon our return to school at 1:15.  Hot lunch will not be served this day!  Please bring a bag lunch to school.

Here's what's going on in 5B this week:

Spelling:  We are on Unit 18 this week.  The words have been posted on the blog.  The pretest will be on Monday and the test will be on Friday.

Language Arts:  Our Time for Kids issue this week will focus on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the words he spoke and deeds he accomplished to inspire us.  We will continue to work on an extended response for writing which will probably come from our current read-aloud book, Wonder
In grammar, our focus will be on adjectives.  We will also begin our inventions presentations on Monday.  The inventions are looking great!

Math Accel:  We will be taking the Unit 3 math test on Monday.  Then, we will continue on in Unit 4 which, at the present time, is on fractions.  We will then move onto decimals and percentages.  If your child would like additional practice, or to view videos about what we're learning in class, please have them go to www.ixl.com or www.learnzillion.com.  These are both excellent websites.

Science:  For the most part, our inventions are finished.  We will be having our Invention Convention on Tuesday.  The students will walk from room to room and vote on their favorites.  Ribbons will be awarded to classroom winners and grade level winners.  We discussed both series and parallel circuits today and then did an experiment with them.  Next week, we will continue to discuss conductors and insulators and static electricity.

That's it for now.  Have a great weekend everyone!
