St. Baldrick's Foundation

For the past few years, a group of kids from May Watts have been working hard to raise money for kids fighting cancer. I am sure you know many of these selfless boys who shave their heads to help others. Their team name is the Future Trailblazers and below is the link to their donation page. If you are so inclined, please make a small donation to help them reach their goal.

5B News for the Week of 02/27/2012

Hello Parents:

Just a reminder that our in school field trip, a Harriet Tubman performance, will be this Monday afternoon.  This should be a great culminating event to what we have studied in class this past week and a half in social studies.  Also, there is no school this Friday, March 2nd, due to Teacher Institute Day.

Here's what's happening in 5B this week:

Reading- During reading, we will continue to do some ISAT reading preparation.  We will also discuss some current events using Time For Kids.  We will do a timed practice ISAT either late this week or next Monday so that the students can get a better idea of how to pace themselves during the actual test.

Flex- We will continue working with the ISAT coach books this week during flex. Early in the week we will be discussing homonyms and multiple meaning words.  We will also continue to develop our vocabularies through a couple of different websites which include http://www.vocabulary.co.il/ and http://www.freerice.com/

Writing- There are just a handful of students who will be finishing up their wormhole projects on Monday.  We will then start a foldable project this week, in which the students write about a topic by writing information on a folder using paper in a creative way.  Since we know a lot about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad, this will be our topic for the folder activity.

Math Acceleration- These past three days, we have been using the laptops during math class to visit websites to help us prepare for the ISAT test and for the PA math test.  This week, we will continue with our journal work on lesson 7.3.  I pushed the quiz back since we didn't use our journals much this week.  Stay tuned for information regarding an upcoming quiz which should cover the first few lessons of Unit 7.

Social Studies- We have done a lot of activities regarding Harriet Tubman, the Civil War, and the Underground Railroad this past week and a half.  We will be introducing the Wardrobe Act on Tuesday of this week.  This should be a fun activity for all the students.  They will be taxed based on what they are wearing.  The students will all be given $200.00 to start and will be penalized for what they are or are not wearing.  This is a fun way to introduce taxing.  We will then continue to discuss the Revolutionary War, Boston Tea Party, etc. during social studies.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me.

Thank you and have a great week!

5B News for the Week of 02/20/2012

Hello Parents & Students,

Welcome to another week in 5B.  Just a reminder that Science Night is this Thursday evening, February 23rd.  Hope to see you there.

Also, there is no school tomorrow, Monday, February 20th, in honor of President's Day.  Also, there is no school for students on Tuesday, February 21st, due to Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Here's what to expect in 5B this week:

Reading- This week in reading we will continue to hone our reading and writing skills with ISAT practice.  We will be taking a couple of practice ISAT tests so that the students will have an idea of how much time they will have to complete the test and also to know what to expect.

Writing- The students are moving along nicely on their current writing project.  They are in the process of completing two time lines.  One time line will be factual, the other will be their own creative "worm hole" time line that will change the course of history.  Most students have finished their research about their topic and are working on one or the other time line.  These will be due this Thursday.  We will also continue to fit in an extended response writing during these weeks leading up to the ISAT.

Math Accel.- Those students who have signed up to take the PA math test should have received a letter and ticket in the mail which will allow the student access to testing.  If you have not, please contact me.
Currently, we have completed up to 7.2 in our math journal.  We will be having a quiz early next week.  I will be letting the students know which lessons it will cover by week's end.  Also, we will be taking at least two more class periods to work on ISAT extended response problems.

Science- We finished our unit on Digestion and took the test last week.  We also completed our analysis of food labels.  Now, we will be moving into Social Studies for the next few weeks.

Social Studies- This week and next, we will continue to discuss the Civil war, Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad and slavery.   We will do a variety of activites pertaining to these topics.  Also, we have a Harriet Tubman performer coming to Watts on the 27th of February to further enhance our knowledge of these topics.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me.

Enjoy the days off!!

ISAT INFORMATION

February 2012

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

During the two-week period beginning Monday, March 5
th and ending Friday, March 16th, Indian Prairie Community Unit School District 204 students enrolled in third through eighth grade will be completing the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). Alternatively, students with significant educational needs will complete the Illinois Alternate Assessment (IAA) within the Wednesday, February 22nd through Friday, March 16th window.

The ISAT is a group-administered achievement test designed to assess the extent to which students are meeting the Illinois Learning Standards. As mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, the collection of this assessment information is required and used to determine whether the district and schools are maintaining Adequate Yearly Progress.

Students in third through eighth grade will be assessed in the achievement areas of reading and mathematics. Additionally, students in fourth and seventh grade will be assessed in the achievement area of science.

Assessment sessions will likely be scheduled during the morning and distributed across multiple school days. Please contact your child’s school directly should you have specific schedule or assessment questions.

Given the critical importance of optimal student performance on these assessments, please encourage your child to demonstrate his or her academic skills and knowledge through these tests.

Thank you for your positive support of our district during the administration of these important assessments.

Regards,

Patrick W. Nolten, Ph.D.

Director of Assessment, Research and Evaluation

Indian Prairie Community Unit School District 204

5B News for the Week of 02/13/2012

Welcome to another week in 5B!

Here's what's going on this week.

First of all, we will have our Valentine's Day party this Tuesday, February 14th.  The students may bring in cards to exchange, but please refrain from sending in candy.  Thank you.

Reading:  During reading, we will continue to do genre work, extended response writing, ISAT prep., and book reports.  Remember, our book reports are due this Wednesday, February 15th.  The students will be presenting them on Wednesday and Thursday during reading time.

Flex.:  This past week, we began working on ISAT prep.  We will continue this practice for the next two to three weeks.  So far, our focus has been on reading comprehension.  We will also be working on vocabulary development and how to better understand what the questions are asking of us.

Writing:    We began working on our new writing project earlier this week.  The students are off to a great start.  All of them have decided on a topic to research.  Many of the students have completed one timeline and have begun working on the second one.  The final project will be two parallel timelines.  One will be factual and the other will be history changing.  Also, some students have started making power points to go along with their timelines.  This is a very ambitious group of students!

Math Accel.:  This past week we tested Unit 6.  This was one of the most difficult units we've studied this year.  The students really stepped it up and did incredibly well on the test.  I am so proud of their effort!  This week, we will begin Unit 7.  We will also be taking some time to continue reviewing ISAT extended response problems.

Science:  We will finish our Digestive unit with the study of food labels.  (Please send in three food labels by Monday.) We will review for the Digestion test on Monday.  A study guide will be coming home this Monday.  The test will be on Wednesday.

Social Studies:  We will be discussing Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, Civil War, and slavery this upcoming week.  Our Harriet Tubman in-school field trip will be on February 27th.  Please return the field trip permission form and money at your earliest convenience.

If your have any questions or concerns, please email me.  Have a wonderful week, everyone!

New Mission Statement for May Watts

Parents:

The May Watts Staff is currently reviewing our school mission statement and we would like your input.  We are asking you to write one sentence that says what May Watts School is all about.  We are asking the fourth and fifth grade students to do this exercise as well this week at school.  The staff is going to review all of the sentences and work to create our new mission statement with input from teachers, students, and parents.  Thank you for your input!  Please email the statements to me at delissa_bennick@ipsd.org.

Thank you!

5B News for the Week of 02/06/2012

Hello Parents!

Here's what's going on in 5B this week:

Reading- This week in reading we will be working on test taking skills, extended response writing using Time For Kids, our reading anthology and ISAT sample tests.  There's a variety of things going on this week during reading time! We will also have our sixth bully lesson this week.

Flex.- During flex, we will begin using our ISAT coach books.  These books are an excellent way to prepare for the reading ISAT test. The ISAT test will be the first week of March this year.  We will use these books for the next three to four weeks during flex. time.

Writing- The students were just introduced to our next writing activity today.  This activity will involve both research and creativity.  The students will be researching an event in history and will then create a factual timeline using this information.  Then, the students will make another timeline that will somehow change the course of history.  This is where the creativity comes in.  The students are very excited about it and were brainstorming various topics to research today during class.

Math Accel- I was able to find a few websites that you might find beneficial when preparing your child for the upcoming PA math test.  The following are the links to them.  When you visit these websites, pay special attention to the areas that will be on the PA math test such as Algebra (7th & 8th grade), Mathematical Reasoning (word problems), Numerical Reasoning (number patterns) and Spatial Reasoning (folding/3 dimensional shapes).
We will finish up Unit 6 on Monday.  Students were given the Unit 6 study guide today and it will be due next Thursday.  The Unit 6 test will also be next Thursday.
Science- We will continue our study of digestion this week.  There will be a short quiz on Wednesday which will include labeling parts of the digestive system.  (mouth, esophogus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine).  The students will take the digestion test either late this week or early next week.

Social Studies- Beginning late this week or early next week, we will return to social studies.  Our topics will include slavery, slave trade, underground railroad, Civil War and Harriet Tubman.

It's going to be a very busy week!  Enjoy the weekend!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me.

Thank you!
