5B News for the Week of 02/20/2012

Hello Parents & Students,

Welcome to another week in 5B.  Just a reminder that Science Night is this Thursday evening, February 23rd.  Hope to see you there.

Also, there is no school tomorrow, Monday, February 20th, in honor of President's Day.  Also, there is no school for students on Tuesday, February 21st, due to Parent-Teacher Conferences.

Here's what to expect in 5B this week:

Reading- This week in reading we will continue to hone our reading and writing skills with ISAT practice.  We will be taking a couple of practice ISAT tests so that the students will have an idea of how much time they will have to complete the test and also to know what to expect.

Writing- The students are moving along nicely on their current writing project.  They are in the process of completing two time lines.  One time line will be factual, the other will be their own creative "worm hole" time line that will change the course of history.  Most students have finished their research about their topic and are working on one or the other time line.  These will be due this Thursday.  We will also continue to fit in an extended response writing during these weeks leading up to the ISAT.

Math Accel.- Those students who have signed up to take the PA math test should have received a letter and ticket in the mail which will allow the student access to testing.  If you have not, please contact me.
Currently, we have completed up to 7.2 in our math journal.  We will be having a quiz early next week.  I will be letting the students know which lessons it will cover by week's end.  Also, we will be taking at least two more class periods to work on ISAT extended response problems.

Science- We finished our unit on Digestion and took the test last week.  We also completed our analysis of food labels.  Now, we will be moving into Social Studies for the next few weeks.

Social Studies- This week and next, we will continue to discuss the Civil war, Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad and slavery.   We will do a variety of activites pertaining to these topics.  Also, we have a Harriet Tubman performer coming to Watts on the 27th of February to further enhance our knowledge of these topics.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me.

Enjoy the days off!!
