5B News for the Week of 02/13/2012

Welcome to another week in 5B!

Here's what's going on this week.

First of all, we will have our Valentine's Day party this Tuesday, February 14th.  The students may bring in cards to exchange, but please refrain from sending in candy.  Thank you. 

Reading:  During reading, we will continue to do genre work, extended response writing, ISAT prep., and book reports.  Remember, our book reports are due this Wednesday, February 15th.  The students will be presenting them on Wednesday and Thursday during reading time.

Flex.:  This past week, we began working on ISAT prep.  We will continue this practice for the next two to three weeks.  So far, our focus has been on reading comprehension.  We will also be working on vocabulary development and how to better understand what the questions are asking of us.

Writing:    We began working on our new writing project earlier this week.  The students are off to a great start.  All of them have decided on a topic to research.  Many of the students have completed one timeline and have begun working on the second one.  The final project will be two parallel timelines.  One will be factual and the other will be history changing.  Also, some students have started making power points to go along with their timelines.  This is a very ambitious group of students!

Math Accel.:  This past week we tested Unit 6.  This was one of the most difficult units we've studied this year.  The students really stepped it up and did incredibly well on the test.  I am so proud of their effort!  This week, we will begin Unit 7.  We will also be taking some time to continue reviewing ISAT extended response problems. 

Science:  We will finish our Digestive unit with the study of food labels.  (Please send in three food labels by Monday.) We will review for the Digestion test on Monday.  A study guide will be coming home this Monday.  The test will be on Wednesday.

Social Studies:  We will be discussing Harriet Tubman, the Underground Railroad, Civil War, and slavery this upcoming week.  Our Harriet Tubman in-school field trip will be on February 27th.  Please return the field trip permission form and money at your earliest convenience.
