5B Activities for the Week of March 24, 2014

Hello Parents and Students:

Just a reminder that Spring Break will begin at the end of this school week.  School will resume on Monday, April 7th.

Also, the end of the 3rd Quarter was this past Friday.  The last quarter of school begins Monday.  Time is flying!

Here's what's going on this week in 5B:

Word Study/Spelling:  We will continue to study Homographs this week.  This is a two part lesson.  We finished part 1 last week and will be doing part 2 this week.  The words have been posted to the blog and the test will be on Friday.  The format for the test will be the same as last week.

Math Acceleration:  We are currently in Unit 6.  We have reviewed multiplication of fractions and will be reviewing division of fractions.  For the last half of the week, we will be doing math brain teasers and puzzles.  After spring break, we will continue in Unit 6 with adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers.

English Language Arts (ELA):  During ELA this week the students will continue to work on their Lemonade books.  They will be due at the end of the week.  We will also be studying Harris Burdick pictures from the book by Chris Van Allsburg, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.  This is a higher level book of short stories that will really make the kids think.  During computer lab time, we will be working on our Writer's Workshop projects. We will also be working on our organizational skills.  I have a lesson to teach about how to best organize our desks.  This should be fun!  Since 4th Quarter will begin on Monday, we will also be changing seats at some point this week.  Also, our theme for 4th Quarter is Moving Forward and our next read-aloud book is entitled, Red Kayak.

Science:  We had our Digestive System test last week and the results were amazing.  This week, we will be finishing up our Digestive System brochures in the computer lab.

That's it for now.  Please email me with any questions.

Thank you!

Hello Parents and Students:

Here's what's going on in 5B this week!

Word Study/Spelling:  This week we will be studying homographs.  Homographs are different from homophones.  Homographs are words that look the same but have multiple meanings.  The word "bat" is a homograph as it can be an animal or it can be a bat that is used in baseball.  This week, the students will be responsible for learning to spell the fourteen homographs that are on the blog and also for learning the meanings of each of the words.  The students will need to match the homograph to one of its meanings.  We will use some class time to study this week as it is a very difficult lesson.

Math Accel.:  We are in the process of testing Unit 5.  Many of the students completed the test on Friday but would like some additional time on Monday to recheck their answers.  Some students will need to finish the test on Monday.  We started Unit 6 this past week also.  Our first lesson was review and covered multiplication of fractions.  We also played a Jeopardy game to review addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions.  We will finish this lesson Monday and continue on in Unit 6 on Thursday.  Remember, the PA math test will occur on Wednesday of this week.  It will be administered during your child's MA class and should only take one session to complete.

English Language Arts (ELA):  This week in ELA we will be working on our "Lemonade" books.  This lesson was introduced to your child at the end of last week.  Each student will be making their own book of poems that are created from a single word.  It takes some creativity!  Last week we reviewed the following parts of speech:  Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs.  This week the students will have a quiz on these.  Also, we will begin a persuasive writing piece this week..most likely later in the week.  The topic is to be determined.  I believe I am going to ask for some input from the students on this one.  :-)  We have just about finished the book, The Liberation of Gabriel King.  This week, we will begin our next read-aloud, Red Kayak.  Our current TFK will focus on electronic books and how public libraries are moving toward this.

Science:  We have a lot going on in science these days!  First, all students should be studying their science notes that are in their journals as well as the Digestive System power point.  There will be a test covering this information on Thursday.  We will also be doing two experiments in class this week.  The first one will show us how our teeth help aid digestion and the second one will focus on how our teeth and tongue work together in digestion.

That's it for now.

Have a great week!

5B Activities for the Week of March 10, 2014

Hello Parents and Students:

ISATs are over!  We enjoyed our Marble Jar Celebration at the end of the week.

Congratulations to all of those students who are continuing to read and log their minutes!  Our class won the Alien again this month!  Great job!

Here's what's going on in 5B this week!

Word Study/Spelling:  This week our focus will be on the advanced spellings of -ti, -tu, -ture, and -ci.  The words have been posted to the blog.  The test will be on Friday, as usual.  The word study lessons these past two weeks have been short with not as many words to learn.  This is why there have been less words posted.

Math Accel:  Unit 5 is a very short unit.  We will be finishing up the last lesson tomorrow.  Our current lesson is on reflections in geometry.  The students should be studying their notes and homework sheets for the test which will be this Friday.  There will be no study guide for this unit.  We will begin Unit 6 mid-week and the focus skill is Number Systems and Algebra Concepts.

English Language Arts (ELA):  This week in ELA we will be finishing up our discussion of the story, Potatoes, Eggs and Coffee Beans.  We will continue our current read-aloud book, The Liberation of Gabriel King.  Our discussions pertaining to this book have been very thoughtful and insightful.  It's making us think.  What a great book it is!  I will be reading a poetry book entitled, Lemonade.  This is a book of poems that are "squeezed" from a single word.  We will then be creating and illustrating our own poems that are "squeezed" from a single word.

Science:  We will begin studying the Digestive System this week.  We will be working in Inquiry Circles to formulate questions pertaining to the digestive system.  I created a power point about the digestive system that we will be viewing and taking notes on.  We will be studying this system until Spring Break.  Over the next three weeks, we will be creating our own medical brochure about the digestive system and creating visuals to describe it.

That's the update for the week!  Please email me with any questions.

Thank you!

A message from the May Watts Service Club:

During this week at the book fair, the Service Club will be collecting money for the Scholastic program called “All for Books”! With the money we raise, we will be able to buy new books for a charter school in Chicago who is need of new materials. If you have extra change, think about helping place a new book a student’s hands that cannot afford it without our help. Look for our sign and the bright orange box at the book fair to donate. If you donate $1.00, or more, your name will go on the “donor” wall in the LMC!

5B Activities for the Week of March 3, 2014

Hello Parents and Students!

Happy March!

This is ISAT testing week.  The ISAT schedule has been posted on Edline.  We will be testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week in both Math and Reading.

Here's what's going on in 5B in the curricular areas this week:

Word Study/Spelling:  We will continue on with Lesson 19.  The lesson target focuses on understanding the advanced spellings of /k/ such as with ch or que.  The words have been posted to the blog and the test will be on Friday as usual.

Math Accel:  All Math Acceleration students will participate in testing for possible qualification for PA math on March 19th.  (see practice websites below)

This week in MA, we will continue in Unit 5 and our targets will be the coordinate plane, quadrants, absolute value and reflections.

I was able to find a few websites that you might find beneficial when preparing your child for the upcoming PA math test.  The following are the links to them.  When you visit these websites, pay special attention to the areas that will be on the PA math test such as Algebra (7th & 8th grade), Mathematical Reasoning (word problems), Numerical Reasoning (number patterns) and Spatial Reasoning (folding/3 dimensional shapes).

English Language Arts (ELA):  Our new read-aloud book is entitled, The Liberation of Gabriel King.  It is a very touching story that addresses courage, civil rights and making critical decisions/choices.
During this time, we will also be finishing up our Invention's Web Quest.  Our current events will focus on adventures in Antarctica and we will be analyzing a letter written by Albert Einstein to then President F.D. Roosevelt and discussing a story entitled, Potatoes, Eggs and Coffee Beans.  We will also fit in some persuasive writing that goes along with this piece.

Social Studies:  We completed our Constitution foldable project and they look great!  This week, we will be using our SS textbook to preview some new vocabulary that goes along with our current SS topic and we will be conducting inquiry circles for student engagement.

Science:  We will begin our next unit of study which will be the Digestive System.  This week we will be focusing on the process of digestion and the organs that are involved with the process.

That's it for now.  Please email me with any questions!

Thank you!
