5B Activities for the Week of March 3, 2014

Hello Parents and Students!

Happy March!

This is ISAT testing week.  The ISAT schedule has been posted on Edline.  We will be testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week in both Math and Reading.

Here's what's going on in 5B in the curricular areas this week:

Word Study/Spelling:  We will continue on with Lesson 19.  The lesson target focuses on understanding the advanced spellings of /k/ such as with ch or que.  The words have been posted to the blog and the test will be on Friday as usual.

Math Accel:  All Math Acceleration students will participate in testing for possible qualification for PA math on March 19th.  (see practice websites below)

This week in MA, we will continue in Unit 5 and our targets will be the coordinate plane, quadrants, absolute value and reflections.

I was able to find a few websites that you might find beneficial when preparing your child for the upcoming PA math test.  The following are the links to them.  When you visit these websites, pay special attention to the areas that will be on the PA math test such as Algebra (7th & 8th grade), Mathematical Reasoning (word problems), Numerical Reasoning (number patterns) and Spatial Reasoning (folding/3 dimensional shapes).

English Language Arts (ELA):  Our new read-aloud book is entitled, The Liberation of Gabriel King.  It is a very touching story that addresses courage, civil rights and making critical decisions/choices.
During this time, we will also be finishing up our Invention's Web Quest.  Our current events will focus on adventures in Antarctica and we will be analyzing a letter written by Albert Einstein to then President F.D. Roosevelt and discussing a story entitled, Potatoes, Eggs and Coffee Beans.  We will also fit in some persuasive writing that goes along with this piece.

Social Studies:  We completed our Constitution foldable project and they look great!  This week, we will be using our SS textbook to preview some new vocabulary that goes along with our current SS topic and we will be conducting inquiry circles for student engagement.

Science:  We will begin our next unit of study which will be the Digestive System.  This week we will be focusing on the process of digestion and the organs that are involved with the process.

That's it for now.  Please email me with any questions!

Thank you!
