Hello Parents and Students:

Here's what's going on in 5B this week!

Word Study/Spelling:  This week we will be studying homographs.  Homographs are different from homophones.  Homographs are words that look the same but have multiple meanings.  The word "bat" is a homograph as it can be an animal or it can be a bat that is used in baseball.  This week, the students will be responsible for learning to spell the fourteen homographs that are on the blog and also for learning the meanings of each of the words.  The students will need to match the homograph to one of its meanings.  We will use some class time to study this week as it is a very difficult lesson.

Math Accel.:  We are in the process of testing Unit 5.  Many of the students completed the test on Friday but would like some additional time on Monday to recheck their answers.  Some students will need to finish the test on Monday.  We started Unit 6 this past week also.  Our first lesson was review and covered multiplication of fractions.  We also played a Jeopardy game to review addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions.  We will finish this lesson Monday and continue on in Unit 6 on Thursday.  Remember, the PA math test will occur on Wednesday of this week.  It will be administered during your child's MA class and should only take one session to complete.

English Language Arts (ELA):  This week in ELA we will be working on our "Lemonade" books.  This lesson was introduced to your child at the end of last week.  Each student will be making their own book of poems that are created from a single word.  It takes some creativity!  Last week we reviewed the following parts of speech:  Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and Adverbs.  This week the students will have a quiz on these.  Also, we will begin a persuasive writing piece this week..most likely later in the week.  The topic is to be determined.  I believe I am going to ask for some input from the students on this one.  :-)  We have just about finished the book, The Liberation of Gabriel King.  This week, we will begin our next read-aloud, Red Kayak.  Our current TFK will focus on electronic books and how public libraries are moving toward this.

Science:  We have a lot going on in science these days!  First, all students should be studying their science notes that are in their journals as well as the Digestive System power point.  There will be a test covering this information on Thursday.  We will also be doing two experiments in class this week.  The first one will show us how our teeth help aid digestion and the second one will focus on how our teeth and tongue work together in digestion.

That's it for now.

Have a great week!
