5B Activities for the Week of February 10, 2014

Hello Parents and Students!

Congratulations on earning the ALIEN again this month!  So proud of all of you who are reading 400+ minutes per month and remembering to log your minutes.

Also, the 800 Minute Book Club Celebration for those TEN  of you who qualified, will take place this Thursday during lunch.  Chocolate chip cookies will be served.  A permission form will be coming home on Monday or Tuesday.

Our Valentine's Day parties will take place on Friday, February 14th at the end of the day.  A student list was emailed and also sent home via backpack mail.  Exchanging Valentine cards is optional, but many 5th grade students still enjoy it.

Here's what's going on in the curricular areas this week:

Word Study/Spelling:  We are already on lesson 17!  We are moving right along.  This week our focus will be on silent consonant combinations such as wr, rh, gh, gn, kn, mn and mb.  This concept will be gradually woven in with previously learned syllable types in multisyllabic words. The test will be on Friday.

Math Accel:  We should be finishing up Unit 4 late this week...or getting very close to it.  However, we will spend some time problem solving this week since it's been awhile.  Also, look for a brief study guide to come home on Friday.  Since this is the Third Quarter, I am now beginning to wean the students off of study guides.  We are learning to become excellent note-takers in class and they are learning how to organize their notes and homework sheets to better prepare themselves for tests.  The Unit 4 test will be sometime the following week.  Stay tuned!

English Language Arts (ELA):  We have a lot going on in ELA currently.  First, we are sharing our picture book mash-up books with the class for a listening/speaking grade.  Please make sure your child has their book at school.  Also, we have 4% left to read in Wonder.  We will definitely be starting our new read-aloud book this week entitled, The Tiger Rising.  Acts of kindness will be discussed and the students will have the opportunity to write about kind behaviors that they observe in the classroom.  These will be just brief notes that they will drop into a bag and I will read them throughout the week.  Our current event will focus on the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Social Studies:  We will continue to work on our Constitution foldable.  They are coming along nicely. The students have been researching various events that made the Constitution the great document that it is.

Science:  Early in the week, the students will be introduced to our next project....Inventions.  We will also be discussing some of the greatest inventions made and how they make our lives easier.  We will also talk about the upcoming Invention Convention.  We ran out of time last week to do this so we will definitely be fitting it in early this week.  :-)

That's it for now.
Please email me with any questions.
Have a great week!
