Hello Parents and Students!
First, I'd like to thank you for all of the Valentine's Day treats and gifts! I sincerely appreciate all of them. Also, a huge thanks to Mrs. Redman and Mrs. Stamenkovic for throwing a fabulous Valentine's Day party for us to enjoy!
I hope that you are all enjoying this long weekend! Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow, Monday, February 17th, due to President's Day. Enjoy the day off!
Also, ISAT testing will occur the first week of March. A hard copy of the schedule was sent home last week with your child. An electronic copy has been uploaded onto Edline.
Also, your child will be bringing home a letter on Tuesday explaining whether or not a conference is needed. Please look for it in your child's take home folder.
Here's what's going on in 5B this week:
Word Study/Spelling: The students will be introduced to the sixth and final syllable type this week...R Controlled. The words have been posted to the blog. The test will be on Friday. This is our 18th word study lesson of the school year. There are a total of 30 lessons for the year so we are working at a good pace. :-)
Math Accel: We will be testing Unit 4 this coming Wednesday. The study guide was sent home last Friday and the students should be studying the notes that they took in their math journals along with any handouts that they received for Unit 4. We will review the study guide on Tuesday. We will also begin Unit 5 this week which will focus on Geometry-congruence, construction and parallel lines. However, we will study integers, rational and irrational numbers first to lead into this.
English Language Arts (ELA): We will be using this time for a variety of activities. We will be using the computer lab to practice our word study words and to continue our SS Constitution projects. The SS project will be due at the end of the week. Since ISATs are coming up, we will also use this time to prepare for both math and reading extended response problems. Our TFK focus will be the coolest inventions of 2013 which goes along with our current science project...inventions. Our current read-aloud book is The Tiger Rising and it is getting very good now.
Social Studies: We will be devoting a lot of class time this week to our Constitution foldable project. They are coming along nicely and should be finished by week's end.
Science: Students should be working on creating an invention. All inventions are due by the end of the day on Thursday. I will allow class time to work on inventions this week. Our Invention Convention will take place on Friday. The students will each vote for their three favorite inventions per classroom and ribbons will be awarded to these students. There will also be three overall winners from the entire 5th grade class. We will also be working on an Invention's WebQuest that I created online.
It's going to be a busy week!
If you have any questions, please email me.
Thank you!
