5B Activities for the Week of February 3rd, 2014

Hello Parents and Students!

Thanks to all of you who came to Open House!  It was great speaking with all of you!

Here's what's going on in 5B this week:

Word Study/Spelling:  The words will remain the same for this week due to the two cold weather days we had last week.  The test will be on Friday.

Math Accel:  We finished our study of greatest common factor and least common multiple and took a quiz on this material this past week.  Moving forward, students will be introduced to multiplying decimals and percentages this week.  Students will be able to express a percent as a decimal and a fraction.  We will also be working on some real world applications using percentages.  Expect a couple of exit slips this week to follow each lesson.

English Language Arts (ELA):  We are just about finished with Wonder.  What a great book that is!  Our next read-aloud will correlate to our 3rd Quarter theme which is....At A Crossroads.  The book will be The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo.  We will also be studying a poem by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken.  This will be ongoing for the next two weeks or so.  Our current event's main topic in our TFK will be The Congo:  Working to Save Mountain Gorillas.  We will also continue with our individual reading conferences.

Science:  We are finishing up our Magnetism/Electricity unit.  The students will have a quiz on electricity this coming Tuesday.  The study guide went home last week.  Sometime late in the week, I will be introducing our Inventions project and the Invention Convention.

Social Studies:  The students were just introduced to a major project this past week.  They will be creating their own "foldable" about the U.S. Constitution.  Creating a foldable is a great way for students to self-differentiate and learn at their own pace.  Guidelines for this project will be coming home on Monday.  This is an at-school activity.  Students will be doing their own research and planning for this project.  I showed them a model of a foldable and most of the students seemed excited to get started on it.

That's it for now.  Please email me with any questions.

Thank you!

~Mrs. Bennick :-)
